Prince Golf Course, Princeville Resort - Princeville Kauai, Hawaii
Golf Digest has named The Prince Course the Number One golf course in the State of Hawaii.
It is also included in their prestigious list of "America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses."
The Prince is one of Hawaii's most challenging golf courses, with a USGA course rating of 75.3 and a 145 slope.
But fear not. Five different tees on each hole allow you to set your own challenge.
Named after Prince Albert, the only son of King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma, The Prince is Robert Trent Jones, Jr.'s masterpiece.
Looking as if it had emerged full-blown from nature, it chugs uphill, jumps ravines and careens downhill like a roller-coaster.
The first hole of this course sets the tone. It's a down-hill ?-mark shaped hole. Smart golfers will take a bogey on the first unless
their first shot sets-up perfectly. Anything less than perfect will probably put you in the bad-stuff and place you
at a triple on the first-hole and set the tone for the entire day.
Don't let this course control you from the first hole, otherwise it will spoil your vacation! On the second hole aim-left, leaving plenty of room to
clear the canyon. Once you make it past these first two holes, you will control the course and enjoy the remainder of the Prince course.
Adjoining it is one of the most magnificent golf and clubhouse facilities in the world, the 60,000 square foot Princeville Golf Club.
Here, golfers can enjoy the amenities of the Princeville Health Club & Spa and the Princeville Restaurant & Bar.
The Golf Club also features full banquet facilities — including two meeting rooms.
Makai Golf Course, Princeville Resort - Princeville, Kauai, Hawaii
Golf Digest lists the Princeville Makai Course in its Top 50 Resort Courses, and has included it in "America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses" for 16 consecutive years.
The Makai is really three courses
in one: the Ocean Nine - venturing closest to the Pacific, this course runs closest to our vacation home which as you can imagine is closest to the ocean. One of our favorite things to do after the course closes and the sun goes down is to walk across the 6th hole and sit on the park-bench located their and listen to the waves crash on the bluff below our home.
The Lakes Nine - winding its way around serene lakes and the
Woods Nine - diverting its way through native woodlands.
Course Features include:
Private lessons/clinics
Tournament assistance
PGA professional staff
Club and shoe rentals
Note: The Makai course is under improvement during 2009, which includes upgrades to the club-house.
We don't know how they could improve this course, but we are eager to see the changes this will bring.
The Makai course is a great place to find famous people. We have met Mr. Incredible (Craig T Nelson) aka Coach,
the singer for the Eagles, and James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) all during the same day of 18 holes.
At least if your don't score good you'll have some stories to tell!
